Quick Answer: The best time to visit Munnar is September to March. The weather is cool and pleasant, the skies are clear, and the waterfalls from monsoon are still full. October-November has the most dramatic post-monsoon greenery.
Munnar Weather Overview
Munnar sits at 1,600m elevation in Kerala's Idukki district. Its climate is defined by three distinct seasons β a pleasant winter (October-February), a warm summer (March-May) and a heavy monsoon (June-September). Each season has something unique to offer.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
January & February β βββββ Peak Season
Temperature: 8Β°C β 20Β°C | Rain: Minimal
Cold nights (sometimes near 0Β°C on foggy nights), sunny days, crystal-clear skies. The most popular months. Eravikulam National Park is fully open. Nilgiri Tahr are most visible. Book well in advance β hotels fill up fast.
March & April β ββββ Good
Temperature: 15Β°C β 25Β°C | Rain: Occasional showers
Temperature rises but Munnar remains cooler than the plains. Gardens are blooming. Pre-monsoon showers begin in April. Fewer crowds than January-February. Good for photography β the light is excellent.
May β βββ Moderate
Temperature: 18Β°C β 28Β°C | Rain: Pre-monsoon showers
Gets warmer. Pre-monsoon begins. Waterfalls start flowing. Some ghat roads get slippery. Not the best time, but still manageable. Fewer tourists means better hotel deals.
June, July & August β ββ Monsoon Season
Temperature: 15Β°C β 22Β°C | Rain: Heavy monsoon
Munnar transforms into a lush, misty wonderland. Waterfalls are spectacular. However, roads can be dangerous, Eravikulam National Park is closed (June 1 β Sept 30), and leeches are active in trekking zones. Suitable only for those who love misty dramatic landscapes and don't mind rain.
September β βββ Late Monsoon
Temperature: 15Β°C β 22Β°C | Rain: Tapering off
Rain begins to reduce. The landscape is at its most vibrant green. Waterfalls still full. A sweet spot for the budget traveler who wants green Munnar without peak-season crowds or prices.
October & November β βββββ Best Overall
Temperature: 10Β°C β 22Β°C | Rain: Occasional showers
Our personal favourite. Post-monsoon Munnar is breathtaking β emerald green hills, full waterfalls, fresh air and comfortable temperatures. Eravikulam reopens October 1. Onam festival season adds cultural colour. Recommended by Strangers Ride.
December β ββββ Christmas Season
Temperature: 8Β°C β 18Β°C | Rain: Rare
Beautiful cold weather. Christmas festivities at Munnar's churches. Very popular with families. Book accommodation early. Tea estates look beautiful in the cool December light.
Neelakurinji β The Once-in-12-Years Phenomenon
The Strobilanthes kunthiana (Neelakurinji) flower blooms once every 12 years, carpeting the Munnar hills in blue-purple. The last bloom was in 2018. The next bloom is expected in 2030. If you plan to visit in 2030, book at least 6 months in advance β it becomes the most spectacular natural event in South India.
