What is Kolukkumalai? At 8,000 feet (2,400m) on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, Kolukkumalai hosts the world's highest tea estate. The only way up is by 4WD jeep on a terrifyingly narrow mountain track. The sunrise above the clouds from here is one of India's most spectacular natural experiences.
Where is Kolukkumalai?
Kolukkumalai is located on the border of Idukki (Kerala) and Theni (Tamil Nadu) districts, about 40 km from Munnar. The base village is Suryanelli or Vattavada (Tamil Nadu side), from where 4WD jeeps take you up the final steep stretch.
How to Reach Kolukkumalai
From Munnar: Drive ~40 km to Vattavada or Suryanelli base (1.5–2 hrs). From Coimbatore: Drive ~120 km via Udumalpet and Chinnamanur into Tamil Nadu side (3.5 hrs). From Theni (Tamil Nadu): 60 km, 2 hrs.
The Jeep Ride: From the base, only government-registered 4WD jeeps are permitted on the 8 km mountain track. The track is steep (45° in places), muddy, and one-vehicle wide. The jeep ride is itself an experience — both thrilling and terrifying.
The Tea Estate
The Kolukkumalai Tea Estate was established in 1930 by the British. At 8,000 feet, the cold temperatures produce slow-grown tea leaves with intense flavour. The estate produces orthodox Nilgiri tea — some of the most prized in the world.
Factory Visit: The old tea factory (vintage 1930s machinery) still operates and is open to visitors. Watch the complete process: withering, rolling, fermenting, drying, sorting. Buy freshly made tea directly from the estate — the flavour is unlike anything you get in shops.
The Sunrise Experience
This is why people come. At 8,000 feet, on clear mornings, you stand above the clouds. The Munnar valley below is completely hidden in mist. The sun rises from behind the Anamalai ranges, lighting up a sea of white clouds below you. It's the kind of sunrise that stays with you forever.
Timing: Jeeps depart from base at 3:30–4:00 AM to reach the top by 5:30 AM for sunrise. Dress very warm — it can be near 5°C at the top in winter.
Camping at Kolukkumalai

Practical Tips
- Clothing: Carry warm layers even in summer — it's cold at 8,000 ft at night and dawn.
- Footwear: Trekking shoes or sturdy sandals. The terrain is rocky.
- Jeep booking: Book 4WD jeeps in advance at peak season.
- Best months: October to February for clear skies. Avoid monsoon (July–Sept) — jeep tracks are treacherous.
- Phone signal: Very weak or absent at the top. Inform people before going.
- Tea: Buy directly from the factory. Much fresher and better than town shops.
