About Kerala Backwaters
Kerala's backwaters are an extensive network of 900+ km of navigable waterways, including rivers, lakes, canals and lagoons that run parallel to the Arabian Sea coast. Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the gateway to this watery world and is nicknamed the "Venice of the East."
The backwaters support a unique ecosystem and a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Farmers, fishermen and boat builders live and work along the waterways, and life revolves around the water rather than the road.
The Houseboat Experience
Staying overnight on a traditional Kerala houseboat (known as a Kettuvallam) is one of the most unique travel experiences in India. These handcrafted boats, made from bamboo poles, coir rope and wooden planks, come equipped with bedrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen and a dining area. Your personal chef prepares authentic Kerala meals as you drift through the canals.
- Cruise through narrow canals and expansive Vembanad Lake
- Watch traditional Chinese fishing nets along the canal banks
- Observe village life, paddy fields and coconut groves
- Sunset over the backwaters from the houseboat deck
- Freshly prepared Kerala seafood meals on board
