Morning Departure & French Quarter
Early morning departure from Chennai (~3 hrs drive). Arrive Pondicherry late morning. Check-in to hotel/guesthouse. Afternoon: French Quarter Heritage Walk — stroll through the iconic yellow buildings, bougainvillea-draped walls and cobblestone streets. Visit Pondicherry Museum — Chola bronzes, French colonial artifacts. Sacred Heart Basilica — beautiful Gothic-style church built in 1908. Sri Aurobindo Ashram — experience the tranquil atmosphere of this globally renowned spiritual institution. Evening: Walk along the famous Promenade Beach (Beach Road) — the 1.5 km boulevard lined with statues, the French war memorial and the iconic white lighthouse. Watch the sunset from the sea wall. Visit the Gandhi Statue surrounded by eight granite pillars. Night: Dinner at a French-Indian café (Pondicherry is famous for unique fusion cuisine). Explore the vibrant café scene on Rue Suffren and Rue Romain Rolland streets. Overnight Pondicherry.
Auroville, Paradise Beach & Return
Morning: Breakfast. Visit Auroville — the experimental township founded in 1968 dedicated to human unity and spirituality. Visit the Matrimandir (from the viewing point) — a stunning golden sphere meditation centre. Walk through Auroville's forests and attend the visitor centre. Mid-morning: Paradise Beach (Chunnambar Beach) — accessible only by boat across a river backwater. Beautiful, relatively uncrowded beach with golden sand. Optional: banana boat ride, beach activities. Afternoon: Visit Serenity Beach — popular with surfers and expats. Arikamedu Archaeological Site (optional) — ancient Indo-Roman trading post. Late afternoon: Shopping at Pondicherry's boutiques — handmade incense, Auroville leather goods, French-inspired artworks. Check-out. Begin return journey. Arrive Chennai by evening.
